Although we'll never again see fallen-flag boxcars rumbling across the great PRR bridge at Safe Harbor, we soon might be able to walk across it. The conversion of the long-abandoned bridge to hiking and biking use is now undergoing initial work, according to a Lancaster Newspapers report. The ties and ballast are being removed and the bridge is being inspected. Manor Township, owner of the in-service part of the trail beyond the far end of the bridge in this photo, is awaiting word on additional funding for the $4 million project. By 2018, with a little bit of luck, we may be able to traverse the entire 23-mile Enola Low Grade Trail, without encountering any gaps.
