What I'm wondering: why the route via BNSF? Direct way from Salt Lake City to San bernadino would be UP's Caliente Sub. Are there any obstacles there or was BNSF that much cheaper that this huge detour was made with this new trainset?

I believe BNSF was chosen due to their mainline and San Bernardino yard being adjacent to the maintenance facility where the DMU was delivered
