A strikingly different, downright alien, landscape from the southwest desert where I was born; the southeastern swamps and forests where I grew up; the midwest farmland of now. Must be quite an environment in which to run a railroad. Would have said "to try to run a railroad" except they have clearly tried and succeeded for quite some time.
