So, those faux-Phase-2 grilles on some ATSF units, which I assumed to be aftermarket parts when I first saw them, were there from new.

Also, here's another interesting tidbit about the paint on these engines. The first order of ATSF SD45-2s delivered in Yellow Warbonnet paint featured a mistake on them, visible here on the third engine. ATSF 5664-5704 had the rear-facing surface of their blower housings painted yellow rather than blue. Why? When looking at a diagram of an engine, the rear of the long hood would be yellow, as would the rear of the cab. However drew up the new paint diagram forgot that the rear of the blower housing would be blue, not yellow, and the engines were carefully masked to pant that surface the wrong color. ATSF 5705-5714 were painted correctly in this regard. ATSF 5705-5714 are also the order in which some received the later corrugated "Dash 2-style" radiator grilles as well.

Per "Triplex's" comment: The radiator grilles in the final order of ATSF SD45-2s were mixed between the early "chicken wire" style and the later corrugated grilles. But the change was random, as only ATSF 5706, 5707, 5712, 5713 and 5714 featured the later corrugated grilles.

One more point about these engines: The first and third engines have black trucks, as delivered (and seen here), indicating that they were the second order of these and the first in Yellow Warbonnet (ATSF 5662-5704). The second and fourth engines have silver trucks, indicating they are from the third - and final - order of ATSF SD45-2s, delivered after the specs for the Yellow Warbonnet scheme were changed from black to silver trucks (ATSF 5705-5714).
