Why was a Montana Rail Link SD45 in Iowa?
|
It's not Montana Rail Link, it's I&M Rail Link. Two different railroads that were owned by the same parent company: Washington Corporation. I&M Rail Link was formed in 1998 to operate some former Milwaukee Road lines the CP/SOO spun off in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Missouri, hence the I&M moniker. Washington Corporation sold the I&M Rail Link off to the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern in 2002, which created the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern. The ICE was later folded into the DME, ending its corporate existence. The DME was then bought out by the Canadian Pacific in 2008. Most of the original DME was sold off to Genessee & Wyoming, forming the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern, while the CP retains a small part of the DME and all of the old MILW/SOO/I&M Rail Link/ICE trackage it originally spun off in the 1990s. Clear as mud yet?
