Must have been something else Santa Fe/BNSF didn't like about the cowl units besides these late comers with their different front ends, because even the older F45s and FP45s (with conventional front steps and front platforms) were pushed out of "lead" duties by Sante Fe/BNSF at some point. I seem to remember a General Order about it in my BNSF days (around '96).
