The sky is unusual because the marine layer (fog) was blown up the pass from the basin below by a northerly breeze where it got stuck on the mountains and started to evaporate in the dry desert air. By mid morning this moist air was gone and the fog never breached the top of the Pass, Normally, the Pass is hot and clear on a late summer day unless there is a monsoonal flow which can be quite impressive.
