A quick question, if I may. I often see these locos in at Derby Midland and even then they have the buffer cars attached. What is the purpose of the buffer cars? Can the S stock not be coupled directly to the 20's?

Daniel, I beleive that's correct - the screw couplings on the 20s don't couple to the LU units so the tank wagons have been converted to act as translator vehicles. The tankers also provide additional brake force as I understand that the LU units are unbraked when running in this formation hence these working running as "class 7" at very low speed.
