On the old SP I heard these called "Strip Joints".

We Have continuous welded track so it has to use a slip joint. The Millau Viaduct in France has an enormous movement. In fact at each end there is an expansion gap of 1 metre. On the road bridge connecting Milton Kentucky to Madison Indiana, on the walkway one can see the scrapes caused by the bridge contacting and expanding. Why can the railroads not do the same?
