Definitely a heritage paint candidate.

I like that paint scheme.

That deserves some serious consideration by AMTRAK for future use. I like it alot. Nice capture!

Nice one! Wish that I had known about this, since I was in Chicago on April 30, and had shot some of the last pre-Amtrak runs. First that I knew of it was the picture in the Chicago Tribune on May 2; no internet then!

I was disappointed when this didn't become the scheme back then.

Go figure they got it right the first time then decided to change. Amtrak should have kept this paint scheme and ditched the others.

Marty - I know this is WAY late, but Roger Puta sure didn't know what he had when he took THIS photo. A rare gem indeed. It's too bad that Amtrak can't decide what paint scheme they want to use (then again they are a GOVERNMENT RUN railroad, which should say a LOT!). I think this paint scheme should have been the one they went with from the beginning and stuck with. or even the "Pepsi Can" paint scheme on the Dash-8's in the late 1980's - 1990's. Maybe the could paint a couple of "Heritage Units" in both of those schemes today! I hope they do! Now that Wick Moorman is on the Board, maybe he will suggest that idea for their Heritage Fleet. Look what he did for NS and their Heritage Program! :-)

Nice shot! What happened to this?

To reply to Mr. Bob Beaumont's question: Mr. Beaumont - Look up RailPictures.net Photo ID: 325085
That photo shows this same locomotive in the Heritage 1 Amtrak scheme in October of 1972 as this one was taken in August of 1971. This locomotive lost this paint scheme and went the way of Amtrak's "can't decide what to paint our locomotives or what paint scheme we want to identify ourselves with" thinking. Eventually this locomotive ended up getting scrapped.
