This is a great photograph! Does anyone know why they blocked out the windows over the hood?

The center windows were likely covered to reduce maintenance like other railroads did and to also protect the crew from things thrown off bridges.

Thanks for the answer. I forgot that railroads often have to deal with issues like that.
