I must ask a question that has bugged me for many years. What is the difference between a Depot and a Station in the USA? In the UK we call the building where passengers catch trains a station, and the place where trains are maintained a depot.

Another question... where does the crew obtain the replacement knuckle from? Is there is a spare on-board somewhere?
|
Sport!, the extra knuckle is usually located on the rear of the engine. Not to hijack the comments section, but I've got a photo of the extras (along with an explanation) here: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=423708

Locomotives carry spares of just about everything (except the 300 lb drawbars) on board. The knuckle however is the biggest thing the conductor is expected to fix now.

I quite concerned about the speed limit in such a heavy snow day!
