How many people besides me would just love to have one of these old things, rescue it and drive off into the sunset ???

Just about every one of us.

I ran the 727 in freight service for the SRNJ on the Salem branch. It was a real beast. The railroad I'm working at now has spoken for these two units and will be added to the two they currently have being rebuilt for exscursion service. As everything else in railroading the time this will happen is unknown.

They were great to look at, but not much fun to work on! My father-in-law, Frank Susnik, was an electrician for the KCS for 42 years, and always said he hated working on the "covered wagons" more than any other engine. Work area was enclosed and very hot most of the time!

I haven't been to Winslow Junction in years....may need to make a trip there though to shoot these soon.

There is just a sadness when you see these once majestic titans rotting away with no dignity.

It certainly is a very sad sight to say the least!!!

I saw these engines back in February. Needless to say, they're in good shape for what they DON'T do.
