I think this unit was running long hood forward doing some switching in the Denver area and hit a truck which resulted in a fire.

Notice how the fuel cooled the fuel tank steel enough that the paint did not burn off. Looks like she was about 2/3 full when the fire happened.

Looks like that's BNSF 6851, which hit a loaded Ethanol truck in Denver on July 23, 2009.

Sad sight to see for an SD40-2 that was still in operation on a large class one railroad, ending what i'm sure was a great career in service. Sad, but Great Catch!

Despite what the critics will say, if the crew survived this accident, it was in no small part due to the fact that the unit was running long hood forward. Nice find, cant see this one running again.

This is why you should never cook your Thanksgiving turkey inside an SD40-2. Seriously though... talk about burnt to a crisp.

Very sad to see this SD40-2 like that, I hope somehow this wonderfull engine returns to the job. It's a greath engine to be scrapped.

I'll say it...."Looks like that green weenie got roasted!!!" Glad to hear there were no injuries.

Thanks for sharing this image, Joel! The informative story really helps for someone (like myself) who wasn't aware that this accident occurred.
