SP had a bunch of U25B's that were reaching the end of their service lives. The consensus was they had a good electrical system (GE 752 traction motors) but the engines were something else. During this time, SP had enjoyed good results rebuilding GP/SD 7's and 9's and so decided to test a rebuild program for the U25's. Two were sent though a major rebuild program and the siste unit 6800 was painted in the bicentenial scheme. While considered successful, the program was deemed too expensive and these units spent their remaining time in LA-WC shuttle service. I remember 6801's booming exhaust as it rolled by Dayton Avenue Tower during my training days.
