While normally I am a fan of John Deere, in this case, well, maybe not so much. Thanks for the pics documenting though.

While definetely a shame.....steam is expensive and I am sure this is a financial move. Thanksfully the railroad isnt shutting down.

Sorry but that green box is a real eye sore. Financial or not, its a real shame to see these little black monsters retired. Takes half the atmosphere away, not that I have been there or anything.

I too am a fan of John Deere farm and construction equipment. With that said, The Mount Washington Cog Railway's own web site has a section that tells just how their new Diesel-Hydraulic locomotives were manufactured in their own shops by the Railway's own employees. The railway simply purchased John Deere Industrial Diesel engines, just as they purchased other commercially manufactured components. I guess if the Railway had used Caterpillar Diesel engines, then Caterpillar would be named as the locomotive builder. I think not. The people running this railway are well versed in what they do. The same section of their web site also details how they built and installed their new Hydraulically operated track switches. I give this very interesting Railway high marks for innovation and sound fiscal responsibility. With the weather station located on top of the mountain the railway is not about to shut down anytime soon.
