This is a straight SD40, not a Dash two. Note the use of the pre-Dash 2 Flexi-Coil truck, instead of the HTC, and there less frame overhang at each end than on the later model.

You can't go by that anymore because so many SD40s and SD45s have been rebuilt into SD40-2s or SD40-3s; hence, the SD40-2R designation on this locomotive because it was rebuilt into Dash-2 specifications. The most you may be sure of when spotting old EMDs is what model it started out as.
