Can locomotives run in MU operation with a car in between like that?

I would imagine that either the car has pass-through connections for MU cables or the second unit is running in radio control like a DPU.

Are those white containers along the walkway used for spraying water on thr rails to check wet tractive force? NS should go AC for coal drags. Those engines are real beasts when it comes to that.
