And by wrong direction, you mean 'Southern Style'? ;)

This is how a Hammerhead is supposed to run. It is NOT wrong.

They are actually running the proper direction, but they are not on Southern trackage so I guess they are running the "wrongn direction"

I'm glad some are getting a little fun out of my statement, I just quoted what the crew said to the TOM as they headed south so they could have better visibility. The Guilford GP-40's are much easier to run this way seeing they are so much smaller. Just to explain a little about why the engine is in this configuration. The Bow power plant only allows 1 engine to move the cars in the plant now (used to allow the entire consist) and the 8991 was the lead engine heading north, the loaded train is stopped short of the plant entrance and then they use the lead engine to shove the empties far enough north of the plant on the main (all single track) to allow the loaded train to be spotted. For whatever reason the crew chose to put the 8991 in the lead heading south also and not use the 8738 which was heading south and 3rd in the consist heading north. Hope this helps, Rich

NS wide cab locomotives are NOT designed to be long hood lead. They are indeed running backwards.
