SP 8576 began life as an 20-cylinder, 3600 h.p. SD45. In rebuilding it into a 16-cylinder, 3000 h.p. SD40M-2, Morrison-Knudsen swapped out the flared radiators for GP40 radiators. The flared radiators were applied to a MARC GP40WH-2 commuter locomotives, itself created from an elongated GP40, which donated the flat radiators for the SD40M-2. The MARC unit needed the extra cooling capacity of the SD45 radiator to cool its own 3000 h.p. prime mover, in addition to a separate HEP power plant.
