Switching cars at Union Pacific's Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF), in Long Beach adjacent to their Dolores Yard, are UP SD40M-2 2664 (for all intents and purposes and SD45) and an SD40-2. UP 2664 was built by EMD in March 1969 as Southern Pacific SD45 9020. It was sold in April 1991 to leaser National Railway Equipment Company (as NREX 9020). NRE in turn sold it to Morrison-Knudsen in June 1994 for rebuilding into an SD40M-2 for long-term lease to Southern Pacific, becoming SP 8588 in the process. (M-K's SD40M-2s were built from a variety of SD40s, SD45s and SDP45s, and were rebuilt with 16-cylinder prime movers [as opposed to the SD45s' 20-cylinder engines], Dash 2-type electrical systems, extended range dynamic brakes, cab air conditioning and "Maxitrax" enhanced wheel-slip control.) UP 2664 was retired in February 2010 and sold to Citicorp Railmark, Inc., and then to NREX (again) as NREX 2664. (Carson, California – June 9, 2005)
