Southern Pacific SD40T-2 8300 leads an eastbound freight past the depot in Tehachapi, California – at milepost 360.5, just 1.9 miles from the summit of the SP’s crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains. The Tehachapi station was built in 1904 and served both the SP (trains such as the San Joaquin Daylight and Owl) and the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe (which operated the San Francisco Chief), which had trackage rights on the SP between Bakersfield and Mojave. This station burned down in 2008, and was rebuilt in 2009. Today it serves as the Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum. (August 31, 1977)
