Rolling east on the Lebanon Valley Line, a Conrail freight passes Valley Junction tower in West Reading, Pennsylvania. Although the tower is at this level, the actual Valley Junction is on the Reading Belt Line, which crosses below the Lebanon Valley Line directly under the photographer. Valley Junction is a wye joining the Belt line with a connector to the Lebanon Valley Line at Wyomissing Junction, about a mile west of this location. The weekend operator at Valley Junction was frequently an older gentleman named Mr. Gracely, who, in a thick Pennsylvania Dutch accent, would provide a lineup, and also tell anybody who was interested what he thought of the latest bonehead move that the trainmaster had made.
