On a bright January morning in 1980, a matched set of Saint Louis-San Francisco GP40-2’s led by the 767 rumble across the Elm Fork of the Trinity River just north of Irving, Texas, with train 33 headed for Fort Worth. The four units, which include the 760, 759 and769, are only a few months old, part of an order of 25 built for Frisco the previous summer. Dash-2’s represent an incremental improvement over EMD’s classic GP40, with upgraded electronics, a modular electronic cabinet, and better traction motor blower ducts.
