The silence of the cold night air is broken as NS 158 thunders into the old railroad town of Pamplin, VA. Enroute to its final destination of Crewe, VA. Leaving Linwood yard at around 09:00 the same morning and arriving around 20:00. This is one of the lengthiest trips for the Piedmont Division crews. The dark signal to the right once protected part of the old N&W mainline that ran from Pamplin via Farmville to Burkeville, VA. Some of the last revenue freights were seen on that line in the late summer of 2005. The tracks on the left were constructed by the N&W in the early 1900's. (Now the current mainline) served as another route to Burkeville, in a way a belt line around Farmville, VA.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
