Pan Am's GP9s had been taken off most assignments around Waterville, Maine by the time of Christmas 2011. Occasionally, one would work in Waterville yard, but not normally beyond the limits. Two days after its first run in new "old" Maine Central-inspired colors, #52 was again in charge of SAPPI-3 on December 26, 2011. Just into its jaunt South from the mill, #52 led 71 and 51 into what would be some of the best drama I'd seen or heard in years. Crossing Route 201 in Hinckley, middle loco #71 was isolated due to low water. The looming climb with two days worth of cars up the grade beyond Route 23 changed that as the train nearly died on the hill. Having no choice while moving at just over 5mph, the crew brought 71 back online just in time. Sounds I'll never forget. While I managed some sweet stills, to this day I wish I had bagged some video of the train on its knees!
