In keeping with its art-deco streamlining, Southern Pacific's Daylight observation car featured a neon tailsign rather than the then-standard drumhead. This tailsign was recreated for SP 4449's trip from the big 4-8-4's home in Portland, Oregon, to the New Orleans World's Fair in 1984. Here we see the rear of the train on the evening of May 11th, with the neon adorning former Great Northern observation car 1290 "Appekunny Mountain". A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
