Old and New, But Both New.
On the evening of September 14, 2024, Staten Island Railway R211S no. 100 is seen leading a test train down into Clifton Yard following a day of service testing between St. George and Great Kills. The cars are brand new - even still having some of their protective wrapping in place - being built by Kawasaki starting in 2023. On the adjacent track is another new arrival to Staten Island: former New York City Transit Authority R32A car 3388. Though it is new to the island, the car had already served for 58 years in the Subway, being one of 600 R32s built by Budd in 1964 and 1965. 3388 and sister 3389 were brought to the Staten Island Railway to be converted into maintenance cars - 3389 was converted into LT001 and fitted with high-powered lasers to remove leaf residue from the rail head in the fall.
