JOSHUA TX Jan 4 1978 — Santa FE U23B 6314 and B23-7 6353 lead a covered hopper train. GE built the unit (s/n 37505) in August 1970 and delivered it with a phase IIb carbody, snowplows front and rear, 79:24 gearing and painted it in bookends livery with blue body with chrome yellow ends. Sometime between June and Aug 26 1972 it was repainted in blue body with yellow warbonnet livery. Before mid-1974 it was revered to 74:18. After Santa Fe retired the unit it was sold to GE in September 1988 for the Super 7 program and was eventually scrapped in Erie PA. My photo.
Aside from Warbonnets and Chiefs, Santa Fe was a workaday railroad like any other. This album showcases that less glamorous--but no less vital--side of the famous ATSF.
