"CT Steam at the Outlets"
On the afternoon of December 31st, 2023, former Connecticut Coke Corporation H.K. Porter 0-4-0 Fireless #3 sits on display at the Westbrook Outlets in Westbrook, Connecticut. Number 3 was originally crafted in 1930 for the Huron Milling Company situated in Harbor Beach, Michigan. In 1947, it changed hands and was acquired by the CT Coke Corp. This locomotive played a crucial role in hauling coal, materials, and freight within the confines of the company's New Haven Plant until the 1960s. Notably, it holds the distinction of being recognized as the last steam locomotive to engage in regular freight service in the state of Connecticut.
After its active service life, Number 3 was donated to the Valley Railroad, where it patiently awaited restoration funds. With the collaborative efforts of the Valley Railroad team and support from Tanger Outlets, a successful cosmetic restoration was undertaken. Today, the locomotive has sits on the Westbrook Outlet grounds, offering a nostalgic glimpse into Connecticut's railway history.
