The St. Paul to Kansas City daily freight train had some unusual motors in the consist. A pair of CP hydrogen locomotives are dead in tow. Each locomotive is painted in a unique paint scheme for the hydrogen program. The #1001 is a home-built unit, converted SD40-2F, and is classified as a H20EL for “hydrogen zero-emissions locomotive." I was surprised to see them in the US, but they were enroute to Kansas City for a event. Here, the 14,000 ton train rounds the curve at Reno on the CP Marquette Sub. The #1001 is ex-CM&Q 9024.
