This locomotive was built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division as Union Pacific SD24B 438B in September 1959. Retired by the UP in October 1977, this cabless locomotive was purchased by Precision National Corporation (Mount Vernon IL) in October 1977. PNC sold it to Illinois Central Gulf, which rebuilt it to ICG SD20 2005 in December 1979 (adding a cab and chopping the nose in the process). ICG sold it in September 1995 to National Railway Equipment, which renumbered it NREX 2005. It was later sold to Iowa Interstate, and renumbered IAIS 101, in September 1996. By 2008, thirty-nine years after it as built, this locomotive was owned by Vulcan Materials Company, renumbered VULX 17836 and assigned to their quarry in Rockingham, North Carolina.
