UP 1995, wearing the iconic Chicago & North Western heritage colors, is in charge of a monster of a manifest heading for Fresno, California from Green River, Wyoming. They're approaching Portola, California where the crew will pick up paperwork from the yard office and proceed into Feather River Canyon. No need for a crew change, as the crews were already swapped in Doyle about an hour or so northwest. With two units up front, one in the middle, and one in the rear, they struggled to gain speed with this 15,000 foot train. The yellow and green vegetation from the tall grass and blooming sagebrush compliment the 1995's paint scheme nicely, and the mountains surrounding the Sierra Valley provide an excellent backdrop. In the background are old Western Pacific searchlight signals for the siding at Hawley.
