Yard moves. The early morning servicing of the Southern Pacific Railroad's narrow gauge Locomotive #10 continues in the yard at Laws, California as she pulls away from the water and oil tanks, with her fireman still up on the tender deck. In the chilly air of this March morning, the steam show from her cylinder cocks is pretty impressive.
This image was created during a March, 2023 photo shoot at the Laws Museum near Bishop, California, organized by Lerro Photography and featuring SP #18, which is owned by the Carson & Colorado Railway from nearby Independence, CA. I have seen this locomotive on multiple railroads in Nevada, Colorado and now, California. Although I have seen many narrow gauge engines over the years, this one definitely takes the prize for best steam show. I recall one morning in Silverton, CO, with C&C Chief Mechanical Officer Randy Babcock at the throttle, when the 18 literally blanketed the yard around the freight house with steam.
