River, road, and rail all carry commerce through downtown Saint Paul. The waterfront area of the state capitol has undergone numerous changes over the years. At one time, steamboat moorings and warehouses lined the riverbanks. Now, even some of the modern buildings that replaced those structures are being torn down to meet the needs of the city's residents in the 21st century. Just a few years ago, this was the view from this bridge. Now, a huge empty space has been opened up for new development. Condominiums and retail shops will supposedly take shape at some point, altering the scene yet again. Amtrak's eastbound Empire Builder completes the scene, just moments from making an on time arrival at Saint Paul Union Depot not long after sunrise on a nice summer morning.
