Providence & Worcester train CT-1 with Connecticut Southern SD40-2 3399 crawls uphill towards Williams Road in Wallingford. What may seem like a normal train picture has a story to go along with it. There are around 40 loaded stone hoppers behind the SD40-2 and a single C40-8 on the rear. The grade leaving Tilcons Reeds Gap Quarry, on the Middletown Main (former New Haven Railroad Air Line) is steep, especially with a heavy train, wet rails, or in this case, aging and inefficient power. After stalling multiple times attempting to make the hill, the crew of CT-1 shoved back to clear Williams Road and wait for further help.
