"AirTrain Construction Detours"
On September 14th, 2022 an AirTrain "Airport Terminals Loop" train crosses from the Inner Loop track to the Outer Loop track as a "Jamaica Main Line" train holds in the distance at Terminal 1 within John F. Kennedy Airport. Due to track work on the Inner Loop that week, all service at the airport terminals operated in a single direction via the Outer Loop with increased Bombardier Innovia Metro Mark II consist sizes.
Under normal operations, Jamaica & Howard Beach "Main Line" trains run counter-clockwise on the outer loop with pairs, while the "Airport Terminals Loop" runs clockwise with a single car confined on the inner loop. The unusual construction service required all trains to run on the outer loop. This resulted in the "Airport Terminals Loop" train making a rare, counter-clockwise detour over the outer loop. In order to maintain a constant rotation, this train had to briefly cross over to utilize the Inner Loop portion of the Airport Wye, then cross back as seen in the photo.
