The SJ&LC was a favourite amongst rail photographers for decades due to its meandering, slow speed trackage, beautiful Vermont scenery and lashups of multiple GE-70 tonners. In 1967 the SJLC started to retire its fleet of GE's and replaced them first with two, ex-NYC GP9's. Five RS-3's were added to the roster between 1968 and 1972. Here, the two GP9's are grinding up the long, steep grade out of St. Johnsbury.
