The lift bridge between Vancouver and North Vancouver is one of the choke points of traffic moving to the ports of the Vancouver Metro Area. The bridge is slow and after exiting to the south the trains immediately enter a long 1 mile single track tunnel. The location has become even worse since the CN takeover of the BC Rail. Much of the traffic that once departed North Vancouver went north over the BC Rail, now no traffic moves that direction and all traffic must pass over this bridge. Note the large freighter docked just west of the bridge. Ships this size also frequent the narrow channel, meaning this bridge also makes frequent lifts every week, compounding congestion problems further.
