The fall color is starting to show on this mid October morning in northwest Georgia, as a pair of AC's GE leads the short Georgia Local NS 371 (Chattanooga,TN-Rome,GA) south on the main 1 track just on the outskirts of Cohutta, GA on the NS Atlanta North-End. With no plans to meet, and even has the interlock ready for this guy in Dalton, GA, NS 371 will run quietly down the 40+ rail mile stretch to it's first schedule stop in the Dalton Industrial Park of Walnut Avenue. NS 371, and northbound counter-part 370 is one of the bright successful efficient local jobs that run both direction daily. This two local jobs were the replacement of the old NS G38 which was a very slow, and cost effective schedule job. Back when it was G38, and only G38 the local job would leave Chattanooga for Rome, and would try to beat it back north for Chattanooga with the same crew in a matter of 12 hour. Better working some of the industries, and depending on the traffic ahead a lot of times NS G38 would be "dog log" and would have to wait for a relived crew to carry on the slack. Since 370, and 371 a lot has gotten done in a efficient way without spending money on crew cost if need being. Which would result in the abolishing of NS G38.
