Taken into service in 2000; the new Pontebbana (or Pontafelbahn is german) is a 90km long double track line trough some miles long tunnels, with a maximum speed 180km/h. Starting at the Austro-Italian border, Tarvisio-Boscoverde the trains descend into the hills and run there in tunnels with the exception of two surface stations 40 miles until Carnia (You can see the last tunnel's gate at the far right), heading more towards Udine come the viaducts over the river Fella. On the photo: REX 1821 from Villach to Udine crosses Pontebbana-e-Fella viaduct and slows for it's stop at Carnia station to pick up the bikers and hikers. This service was introduces specificly for bikers, because the old railway line was converted into 'Alpen-Adria bikeway' and these two pair of Regional expresses are taking the people up to the top from both countries to Tarvisio/ Ugovizza/ Pontebba so they can roll down as long as they like. Coaches are from ÖBB, Lok from FUC, an italian privateer.
