The trailers of a high priority Z-train for San Bernardino, CA snake through the Crookton Cutoff at nearly 70 MPH as a Richmond, CA to Clovis, NM stack train grinds up the one percent grade. Open in the 1960s, the Crookton Cutoff was a new alignment for the Santa Fe Railway to help tackle the grade of the Arizona Divide with a more gentle grade; compared to the 4% grade through Ash Fork.
