On a pleasant August afternoon, a Union Pacific automobile train heads west behind Chicago & North Western GP50 5074, UP SD40 3052 and C&NW SD40-2 6845. This is 1988, and the UP's merger with the C&NW is still seven years in the future. Interestingly, UP SD40 3052 would be retired the next year, in 1989, and its number would be resurrected again after the merger, when C&NW SD40-2 6887 would become UP 3052.
