The Collapse of the East Portal of Tunnel 16 - [Gorge Ride 2017 Series] - Debris from the collapse of the rock around the east portal of Tunnel 16 lies in the road bed after an unusually wet winter in the Sonoran Desert.
Lately there are rumors that once the Bankruptcy of the PIR (Pacific and Imperial Railway) are complete, Baja Rail (a Mexican concern) is going to come in and rehabilitate the line between Coyote Wells and the Border.
While that sounds all well and good on paper, or more accurately, the Internet - since when are we supposed to believe things that are posted on the Internet?
Further, since when does a Mexican company invest heavily in building infrastructure across the Border in the United States (usually the capital moves the other way) and what do they plan to accomplish that hasn't already been tried by the mirage that is the PIR?
Bottom line, if this route had any economic value to move containers from the maquiladoras south of the Border to Coyote Wells, or Plaster City for interchange with the UP on the El Centro Subdivision, the Union Pacific would already be doing it (they sold the line to San Diego MTS after inheriting it from Southern Pacific).
Consequently, it stands to reason that the "Impossible Railroad" is more impossible now, than it was when John Sprekles built it 100 years ago.
