For awhile the Santa Fe/BNSF ran a coal train from New Mexico to Chicago. These trains started in September 1992 and ran from the York Canyon Mine in New Mexico via Raton Pass, to the C&NW at McCook, IL, via the IHB. The C&NW took them up to the Wisconsin Electric Oak Creek plant just south of Milwaukee, WI. Service ended sometime in 1996. It was kind of odd seeing heavy coal trains along the Transcon in Missouri/Illinois where hotshot normally roamed. Here a loaded coal train has just left Galesburg in the rear view mirror with a hefty SD45-2 leads 2 GE's on the Chilly Sub.
