An eastbound Conrail manifest nears the end of the Lebanon Valley line as it approaches the Center Street wye in Reading, Pennsylvania. The lead unit, SD40-2 6432, still sports a star under its road number on the cab side. The star indicates that it was one of ten SD40-2’s and ten C30-7’s delivered in 1977 that were subjects of an operation and maintenance comparison between the two builders’ six axle, 3000 horsepower units. Ultimately the EMD’s won.
