Three Rio Grande K-36 2-8-2s haul a freight up the steep 4% grade of Cumbres Pass out of Chama, New Mexico, on October 25, 2008. The train is rounding a curve between Lobato and Dalton west of milepost 339. Once the freight reaches the top of the pass, No. 489 and pile driver OB will cut off and head east as a separate train. Rear helper No. 488 will also be cut out of the train (Locomotive is cut in ahead of the cabooses) and head back to Chama. Road engine No. 487 will take the freight to Osier. This Rio Grande-lettered freight train is being operated by the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad as a photo train for photographers and sponsored by Chama Steam VII on October 25, 2008.
