It's a year since the last diesel locomotive worked Auckland Transport services on the Western Line. 4104 hauls one of the last trains from Waitakere up the 2% grade to Waitakere tunnel. Trains on this scenic section beyond Swanson were replaced by buses. The cars are rebulit British Rail MkII and most the rolling stock has been sold to overseas buyers.
Trains on 3' 6" (1.067m) track from Whangarei to Bluff with virtually heritage rebuilt EMD and GE locomotives still the mainstay power. The network was privatized in 1990's and operated by Toll until 2008 when state owned KiwiRail was established.
