Freights north of Anchorage can be rather elusive with only 5 day service, late call times and often marginal weather during the summer when you have the best opportunity to actually see one. But sometimes you get lucky. Such was the case on 7/12/15 when I decided to drive out to the Matanuska River crossing about 30 miles from my house and hope for the best. Leaving my house I was in a big hole of sunshine but sun that hole closed and the clouds grew dark and ominous. Then the rain fell, a drizzle at first, then in buckets, however today was to be a lucky one as by the time I reached my destination the rain had stopped and some holes had developed. With the sun slowly setting it looked entirely possible that the sun would drop below the cloud cover. That is exactly what happened, at about 8:45 PM the sun dropped below the clouds and lit the scene, the train arrived at 9:05 PM and the photo you see was the result. Sometimes you get lucky but I am reminded that had I decided to turn back when I hit the rain I would have missed this golden opportunity.
