Eight year old Wisconsin Central had really come into its own by 1995. It was doing a superb job of providing local customers with top-notch service, but it was also growing, having gained access to the Duluth gateway for iron ore and CN traffic. Additionally it was acquiring other carriers such as Green Bay & Western, Fox River Valley and Algoma Central. As a result it needed more power, and all three units in this photo reflect that. It became common to see bright Santa Fe SD45s mixed with shiny maroon WC units as the second hand purchases continued.
